A bottle that inhales a balloon? How this can be possible. Yes, it is possible. Do you know that air expands as it gets hot and contracts as it gets cool? Let us see this through a balloon experiment.
Try it yourself
- A balloon
- A plastic bottle (used clean empty Coca Cola or Pepsi bottle will work)
- Large bowl
- Hot water
- Cold water
Step 1: Fill the bottle with hot water, swirl the water around until the bottle is hot. Pour away the hot water.
Step 2: Refill the bottle with hot water up to 25% of the bottle. Attach the balloon tight to the mouth of the bottle.
Step 3: Fill the bowl with cold water and put more ice to it.
Step 4: Place the bottle into the bowl of water and ice.
You will notice that the bottle is inhaling balloon inwards.
This is because the hot water in the bottle heats up the air and so the hot air expanded and escaped out through the mouth. As the bottle is immersed in cold water with its mouth closed with balloon, the air inside gets cooler and it creates vacuum.
