Do you know that pepper was once famous as black gold? Pepper gives a unique taste to the dishes and makes the food lightly hot in taste. Today, we are doing an experiment where pepper powder is chased away by liquid detergent. So, let us see it practically through our chased away pepper experiment.
Try it yourself
- Pepper powder
- A bowl of water (make sure that the bowl is slightly wide)
- Liquid dishwasher
Step 1: Sprinkle pepper powder into the water.
Step 2: The pepper powder will be somewhat evenly distributed on the surface of the water.
Step 3: Take a drop of liquid dishwasher on your index finger.
Step 4: Touch the water with your index finger that has liquid soap on it.
You will see that the pepper powder that was almost evenly distributed moves away from the point that you touched in the water.
It is not the pepper that is chased away, but the water beneath the pepper. Surfactants reduces the surface tension of the water (dishwasher is a Surfactant). The pepper will stay on the water that has a higher surface tension.
