Is it Gas or Solid for Sound: Part 2?

Experiments & Chemical Reactions

Experiments Gas or Solid Experiment Part 2: We have already seen the efficiency of solid surface to transmit sound over the gaseous surface (See the experiment of metal hanger – Is it Gas or Solid for Sound part 1). Here we will perform another experiment to assess the fact.

Try it yourself

You need:

  1. A table of glass surface or metal surface

That’s all.

What next?

Step 1: Using your finger nails knock over the table surface.

Step 2: Observe how loud the knocking sound is.

Step 3: Repeat the first step. This time keep your ears against the surface of the table. The distance between knocking point and your ears must be approximately in same distance during both trials.

Step 4: Observe how loud the knocking sound is.

Logic:

This time again, the sound will be louder as you keep your ear against the table surface. In fact, the sound intensity may not be much different between the activities. Yet you will experience the second event louder as you have a solid medium (table) to transmit sound.
