Do you know that fire extinguishers are one among the major requirements of safety as you build a public space? Fire extinguisher is a protective device used for terminating fire or controlling fire. Let us try making a simple fire extinguisher using vinegar and baking soda at home. In our homemade fire extinguisher experiment we are using fire, and so it must be done only under the supervision of adults.
Try it yourself
- A bowl
- A candle
- Baking Soda
Step 1: Stick the candle to the middle of the bowl
Step 2: Spread some baking soda around the bowl
Step 3: Light up the candle using your match
Step 4: Once the candle is stable with fire, pour some vinegar to the baking soda
You will notice that the candle is put off in a few seconds.
What is the logic behind our homemade fire extinguisher? As vinegar mixes with baking soda, it produces carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is an excellent player in stopping fire. You can also try this by mixing water and ENO or with the help of a pepsi. In all these cases, the carbon dioxide gas flows down from the bottle and puts off the fire. So what do you think? Carbon dioxide gas is not all bad after all!
