Temperatures are rising faster than we think

Do you know that temperatures are rising faster than what we think? Environmentalists and scientists have been warning us from ages that our lifestyles need to be checked or else we’ll have to face the wrath of Mother Nature. We turned a deaf ear to those because we kept thinking that it either wouldn’t happen or it would happen long after we’re gone. But it seems like we will have to pay for our recklessness sooner than we thought.

New assessment methods

Scientists have developed a new methodology to assess the Earth’s climatic conditions. It is based on observing the climatic patterns and variations, as well as checking the oceans ability absorb a part of the carbons present around.

Recently, the Nature Climate Change journal published officially that scientists have found reason to believe that if our rate of emission of greenhouse gases continues, then there would be a rise of almost 3 degrees Fahrenheit in around 15 years. Even if we could stop all greenhouse gas emissions by 2017, and inculcate a more environment-friendly lifestyle, the Earth’s temperature would still rise by around 2 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century!

We can’t reverse the misdoings of our past so easily!

The regulation of Earth’s global warming was a major topic of discussion at the United Nations meeting that was conducted the previous year.

Global warming – a threat to our survival

So, what is global warming? Global warming is the rise in the Earth’s temperatures due to the large amount of carbon dioxide and other toxic gases in the Earth’s atmosphere as a result of an increase in the burning of fossil fuels, use of substances that emit chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as deodorants and refrigerants.

At the UN meeting, representatives of 195 different countries signed a consensus to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of their respective countries in order to limit the rise in temperature to 3 degrees Fahrenheit or lesser by the end of 2100.

Previously, we relied on computer based models and simulations to make an estimate of the rise in temperatures and on how much time we have to make the required amends. However, this new methodology developed by Pincus and Thorsten Mauritsen from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology gives us more accurate results. The results gave a detailed report on the ability of the oceans to absorb carbon, the imbalance in the planet’s energy and the effect of the climatic changes on the fine particles present in the atmosphere, all owing to the growing global warming.

Mother Nature is warning us to mend our ways

The results are shocking and it is about time that we did something about it. The results indicate that even if we cut down our emissions completely it is highly unlikely that we will be able to stay true to our target of limiting the rise in temperature to 3 degrees Fahrenheit. Even the oceans may not be able to help us much on this. The maximum possible decrease they could bring about would be about 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Global warming is not an issue to be taken lightly. It’s high time we pulled our socks up, for it’s a matter of our very own existence. If we don’t realize the fact that temperatures are rising faster and it threatens our existence, human race can be destroyed sooner than we imagine.
